Disclaimer: This is just my thoughts and opinions and should not be taken as an indicative list Green list countries: New rules for England revealed (BBC, 7 May 2021) Green list countries: New rules for England revealed - BBC News The green list of Summer 2021 was announced in early May and it was considered somewhat disappointing. Many airlines were expecting more than 12 countries with the only major touristic country being Portugal. Since the list, many airlines expanded operations between the UK and Faro in the Algarve. The next green list is expected this week but where could be added? Malta: Malta's COVID rate is 4.14 per 100,000 according to 'Our World in Data' (1), about 10 times fewer cases than the current UK COVID rate. Additionally, approximately 71% of the country's population has had at least 1 vaccine with 46% having 2 vaccines, thus having a higher vaccine rate than the UK. The country benefits from not having a land border, thus all international transm

Why Wizz Air should consider Newcastle

Wizz Air are one of the most ambitious airlines in Eur ope, starting out in Eastern Europe and serving a 'Visiting Friends and Relatives' market, to expanding in Western Europe and serving leisure-orientated routes. In 2020, Wizz Air announced 2 new bases in the UK - Doncaster/Sheffield and London Gatwick, with a third, Cardiff, launching in June 2021. This has taken Wizz Air to 4 bases across the UK and a total of 11 airports served. Yet one region is mysteriously  absent from Wizz Air's expansion - North East England. Newcastle is the 11th busiest airport in the UK and 2nd busiest in the UK outside of London without a Wizz Air route (after Manchester). In 2019, the airport served approximately 5.2 million passengers with some of its busiest routes including Alicante, Tenerife and Malaga within the top 10 from the airport. The Newcastle catchment also stretches a wide area - including Scotland, North East England and Yorkshire, making it a lucrative market for any airline.

Has Flybe's collapse allowed Belfast City to prosper?

On 5 March 2020, Flybe ceased operations, leading to many routes across the United Kingdom being cut. At Belfast City, Flybe had 70.3% of total seats and 80.3% of movements with a total of 679,927 scheduled departure seats. However, this gave Belfast City an opportunity - to be less reliant on one carrier and to spread its operations across many. First came Loganair - adding flights from Aberdeen and Inverness followed by Eastern Airways launching Southampton flights. In July 2020, BA CityFlyer announced a London City route from September 2020 before Stobart Air added 6 routes from Belfast City under the Aer Lingus Regional brand - Birmingham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds/Bradford and Manchester. This led to the first base at Belfast City following the collapse of Flybe - albeit at reduced frequencies. Finally in 2020, Loganair announced a new route from Dundee, the first route which was not previously served by Flybe. Yet it was in 2021 when Belfast City really f ound their

Wizz Air Norway - What went wrong?

Wizz Air are one of the boldest airlines in Europe at present in terms of expansion, starting out in Eastern Europe and serving a 'Visiting Friends and Relatives' market, to expanding in Western Europe and serving leisure-orientated routes. Throughout 2020, Wizz Air decided to try the domestic markets in two countries - Italy and Norway, with mixed results. COVID has led to travel restrictions across Europe in 2020 and early 2021, however, restricting travel in a single country can be difficult. Furthermore, countries are likely to open up internally before allowing international routes to resume. This led to Wizz Air looking to diversify their network and launch domestic routes from Italy and Norway - 2 of the largest markets in Europe for domestic travel due to their geographic nature of long, slim countries resulting in long travel times. Over the last 12 months, Wizz Air's Italy operation has grown from strength to strength, with bases in 5 Italian cities and have recen
