22 March 2022 Flybe have announced its first routes - 23 in total, operating from 16 airports including 12 in the United Kingdom. Belfast City and Birmingham are its initial bases and Belfast has over half of the routes served. However, is there a missed opportunity for Flybe? Based on the initial new routes, Flybe will face competition on 16 of the 23 routes including 11 out of 12 serving Belfast City. Of the 19 that are to operate year round, just 3 do not face any competition: Amsterdam - East Midlands Belfast City - East Midlands Leeds/Bradford - London Heathrow Here lies problem number 1 for Flybe - they are targeting routes already served. There is a benefit to this strategy, the market is known, customers are already flying the routes and Flybe can enter with attractive fares to shift consumers from one airline to another. Flybe was previously one of Europe's largest previous carriers before its collapse in March 2020 and was the biggest airline in the domestic market in the United Kingdom - with 46.4% of seats in UK domestic regional market (excluding London). Following the collapse of Flybe in March 2020 and liquidation of Stobart Air in June 2021, many routes between Ireland and the United Kingdom were left unserved. Ryanair have announced 2 aircraft and 12 new routes from Newcastle. Over recent months, Jet2 and TUI Airways have announced an additional aircraft for Summer 2022, and with Ryanair launching a two aircraft base - it demonstrates the increased demand and competition from the North East Airport. In September 2020, easyJet closed its 3 aircraft base in Newcastle - leaving the airport with no based low cost carrier. Ryanair has filled the void and allowed the airport to have three dominant airlines competition in the Newcastle leisure market. 21 June 2021 Eurowings announced a new route from Prague to Birmingham with flights commencing 1 November 2021. The announcement was one of 11 new routes from Prague,  where Eurowings plan to base 2 Airbus A320 aircraft from 31 October 2021, with an additional aircraft planned for Summer 2022. Eurowings will compete directly with Jet2 in Winter 2021. Eurowings will operate three weekly flights between Birmingham and Prague, whilst Jet2 will operate two weekly flights between the two cities.
